Project Status Update:

Sawbrook Steel Receives $200k Grant for Plant-Wide Assessment

By Neil Chaudhry, COO & VP Business Development, buyCASTINGS

As part of DOE’s program to help Industries of the Future streamline with respect to energy usage, environmental issues, and productivity, buyCASTINGS assembled a team of experts to evaluate the Sawbrook Steel Casting Plant in Cincinnati, Ohio earlier this year. (See more details in NetCaster Issue#6 http://www.buycastings.com/newsletter_6/sawbrook.html.) The team is now writing up their recommendations for cost savings. In the past projects done for foundries, this has resulted in excess of $10M in cost savings recommendations. The table below shows some of the potential areas of cost reduction for foundries in general – the exact nature of recommendation and the exact dollar amounts of potential savings are kept proprietary.

Since April 24, 2003, buyCASTINGS team of experts (selected from our vast network of suppliers and service provider members) has been evaluating the Sawbrook Steel Casting Plant from a variety of perspectives. The table below shows some of the key areas of focus for foundry assessments.

buyCASTINGS’ Foundry Assessments

Areas Addressed Potential Areas of Cost Savings Evaluated
Energy Usage Melt Furnaces, Annealing Furnaces, Dust Collectors, Air Compressors
Productivity Scrap Rate, Work-In-Process, Plant Layout, Operating Procedures
