A Giant Sleeps
A Memorial To Frank DeMeo

On Friday the 5th of September 2003, the U.S metal casting industry lost a true giant and leader, and I lost a confidant, business associate and a friend. C. Frank DeMeo (Frank), former CEO of General Castings, was not born into the foundry industry but embraced it as an outsider and had a vision on what it could be and made it his life's work. From his acquisition of General Castings to its rapid growth, he had the desire to make metal casting his and his children's future. As past Chairman of the Ohio Cast Metals Association (OCMA) his work supporting the industry in its battle with the EPA to protect Ohio foundries from the application of the "8 and 40" rule to their operations.  This resulted in the Ohio EPA agreeing to utilize its enforcement discretion, protecting Ohio foundries. Ohio foundries were made exempt from the "8 and 40" rule. Frank had many new ideas on how to grow the industry by finding new uses for castings and using new technology to improve efficiency of the present process. His ability to partner with other companies is the business strategy that helped his company to grow and become successful.

As a personal friend, Frank imparted many ideas and thoughts that have made our business better and made me a better person. His jovial personality, even in times of trouble, is a virtue that I strive for and I most admired. Away from the office, he enjoyed family life, golf, fine food and entertainment and seemed to mix in business at just the right amount to make every meeting with him enjoyable, entertaining and a learning experience.

As both a friend and industry leader, Frank will be missed by many. The industry will have hard time finding a forward thinker like him to fill his shoes with the desire he had for the success of the industry.

We want to express our condolences to his wife, children, family and friends and want them to know that our prayers are with them at this difficult time.
